1 Way to Waste All of your Small Business Advertising Dollars

Want to learn how to lose all of your small business advertising money? Keep spending your advertising dollars and don’t worry about what customers are discovering about you and your company. Don’t worry about how your costly advertising is affecting your customers and their money.

The majority of small business owners would never admit to wasting company funds, but that’s exactly what they’re doing when they don’t track and measure the results their advertisements gain from customers. Small business owners and managers talk with the advertising executives who sell them advertising space or time-on television or on the radio, in the newspaper or magazines, on the Internet, in fliers, or in other avenues-and they hear about the numbers. They often throw out the results from demographics, reader and listener-ships, and “hits” that your advertising will reach. It’s easy to assume with all these numbers being touted that your advertising message will be seen and heard by many, many people.

But advertising effectively is about more than having your message seen and heard. First your customers do need to view your message multiple times before they’ll act, that’s a given. Second step that matters is the customer’s action. Whether it’s grabbing the phone to call your business, or making a purchase on your website. And finally, you have to record which advertisements received the best actions taken by customers.

So basically, the main thing that matters is that action based off of your small business advertising. You need to be counting these actions as closely as you would the cash that your company brings in. You should be calculating your return from every advertising dollar your spend on different venues and promotions. This being the best approach to making sure that your advertising funds are being used effectively.

“How did you hear about our business?” This question is asked by some business owners to their customers or new clients, but many don’t even go that far.. The companies that do record the results, often never actually analyse the data. In fact, the data isn’t even completely collected.

Spend some time learning the ways that profitable businesses make money tracking the results from their business advertising, before you throw any more money at yours. Then study ways to take those results, and calculate into them the return off of your investments. Learn how to determine which advertising is effective for your business and why. Study which various demographic groups had the most action among customers from your advertising. Study which advertisements are getting the best results out of your customers, based on your return.

An advertising executive that really knows his or her market and his or her business will help teach owners how they can measure results from their small business advertising dollars to see how effective it is. There’s many ways to easily accomplish this effectively. It doesn’t require surveys or other outside resources to easily poll your customers.

It’s easy. If you don’t want the fate of many small business advertising that waste their funds on under-effective advertising, then learn how to measure the effectiveness of your own small business advertising. And then ask the next advertising executive who approaches you: “How can I track and measure the results of this advertising to prove that your advertising is as effective as you say it is?”
