In a technologically advanced society it is almost imperative for everybody to have a website. Here are a few ways to improve a website that may improve your business.
1. Use light backgrounds- There is a feeling associated with every site and color makes a big difference. Dark backgrounds have a draining feel and make it more difficult for users to read text. Lighter backgrounds have a rejuvenating feel and help to make text pop out so it is easier to read.
Make sure your page loads fast- Often times people think to have a successful business they have to make the most high-tec website possible. They often use flash or large image sizes. The pages look great, but often times users will never see the website because they won’t wait for it load. You only have a couple seconds to catch somebody’s attention with your website and they will not wait. Also it is important to note that search engines can’t index the text from flash sites or images.
Make the page at a 5th grade level comprehension level- People don’t want to have to think too hard when they come to your website. They want to read a few headlines, get an idea of your site, and click through a few pages. Then if they like what they see they will investigate further. If the page is disorganized or if it isn’t focused, users will quickly bounce from your site and go onto the next thing that is easy to read and follow.
Your site must bring value to the user. There are too many blogs and websites that are just bla. There is nothing special about them or they just repeat whatever is already out on the web. By creating a unique voice that brings quality content to the reader will attract more users and help them participate in your business.
Brand your site. Make sure it has a specific theme regarding the message you are trying to get across. Make a unique logo, a URL that is related to your branding and make sure you have a clear message of what you are promoting or selling on your site.
Keep it friendly. Don’t push things on your visitors. Make the end result you are trying to accomplish easily accessible to the visitors, but don’t slam it in their face. Part of a website is to establish yourself as somebody who knows what you are doing, or somebody who is offering a needed product. Don’t ruin that by being pushy.
Stand out from the crowd. You want a simple website design that is business-like, but it can’t be exactly like everybody else. You want to be rememberable and you want to attract repeat viewers. Stay away from common templates and consider hiring a designer. Again I will emphasize that you need to keep it simple.
The web is everywhere now. A web presence is essential and if you stick to the 7 tips above you will have a great start to a website that is web friendly. In addition to a website I always recommend having a blog.
