There are very few small business that can actually have a distributed team with everyone working from home. What I have realized that most 'employees' are not self-starters and need to be managed. However, if you have a business with 5-10 people and everyone is a stake holder, telecommute makes a lot of sense. Bigger companies can work efficiently even with remote workers because they have different measures of accountability and they have people in managerial roles that only monitor status of projects.
