Since the 1950s, sublimated messages have been in the spotlight as a way of manipulating consumer spending. James Vicary conducted a study during that time in which his results indicated that people are indeed influenced by such messages. If you have read any articles or information on subliminal video or audio, they will often point out this experiment as it seems to indicate the effectiveness of subliminal messages. Vicary came forward a few years later and admitted the experiment was never conducted.
All the subliminal video manufacturers who cite this experiment in their advertisements are either ignorant, naive or are deliberately trying to mislead. Not a good start for any company trying to sell subliminal products. Alright, so the experiment on visual subliminals that everyone refers to was a complete sham; but what about any other experiments? Over the years, there have been a whole host of scientific experiments to uncover whether subliminal messaging actually works. To be perfectly honest, the results have been hit and miss regarding this whole concept.
Of course there have been some positive results, so what about those? It’s not all smoke and mirrors or even doom and gloom for sublimated messaging. There have been a few small experiments that have yielded positive results, but there are some clear guidelines on how to be successful when targeting subliminal messages to consumers. It is the meaning in the message that is important and should be limited to just a single word. Phrases, sentences and complex statements are simply lost; a repeating image or word is the most effective.
The biggest influence on an individual is not the subliminal message itself, but the attitude of the consumer. It has been found that subliminal messages that target a person’s current state are much more effective than general messages. An example would be someone who is thirsty. This person will be more influenced by a message for a drink than someone who isn’t thirsty at all. What this means is that if you are already mentally prepared for success, then self-help sublimated video and audio messages will work.
Unconscious messages exploit the idea that our mind can process a lot more information than we truly understand. If you are watching a subliminal video that contains these messages, then chances are that the message will only appear for a brief time. This means that the messages will only be visible on screen for a fraction or two of a second. They are fast enough for our subconscious mind to notice them, but far too quick for the conscious mind to notice them at all.
