To Online Marketing Beginners: Here Is The Wrong Question To Ask

When I see online marketing newbies ask this one question, I know there is a bigger problem brewing that they are not aware of. The truth will hit them hard when they find out they’ve done things in backwards order. And that question is: How do I get traffic to my website?

Wrong Way Around. Unfortunately, online marketing newbies fall into the trap of buying an ebook, being told to go to Clickbank and finding a product, building a website or blog to promote their affiliate link and then get traffic. Here’s where they get stuck, and right on cue they’re running into forums or Yahoo Answers to find out how they can drive more traffic to their websites. This is because half-baked ebooks tell them to hunt for money first then traffic.

Right Way Around. You must look for traffic first. In online marketing, you must first determine if there is a feasable niche to profit from. This entails doing proper keyword research for the right keyword phrases that are not too competitive yet yield enough traffic to make it worth their time building webpages.

SEO. The crux of online marketing is a good fundamentals understanding of SEO. You cannot build a high-ranking website without understanding Google’s rules. Most online marketing beginners hear about SEO vaguely talked about in ebooks or in bits and bobs in forums, yet they themselves, cannot determine if they need to use meta tags or not. Is their website easy to navigate by Google’s standards? Do they know the importance of website aesthetics to Google? If one cannot answer these questions with conviction, need to learn SEO without fail.

Desperate Online Marketing. With a bad economy, more people are looking for answers on the internet. Those with bills piled up are the most fervent to try online marketing and are the most susceptible to scams. To these folks, I say, "Slow Down! You’ll lose even more money if you keep going down this road. Separate your financial obligations and get professional assistance with them. Do not look to online marketing as a quick fix because there is nothing quick about succeeding in online marketing. It takes work, the right tools, time and your time. There is no such thing as free and fast results in online marketing — at all!

Newbies can’t be blamed for these mistakes because they’ve been taught wrong, but they must be warned. Resorting to blackhat, gray hat and other cheater methods may produce a short term result but will only incur Google’s ire in the future and cause you to be penalized.
