The doom and gloom of the recession seems to be haunting businesses everywhere, the media constantly presenting sad facts and figures. What seems to have avoided the real slog however seems to be online sales, which are doing alright despite what is happening else where. Here in this article we shall be looking at different types of search engine optimisation, what it is and how it can benefit your company and boost online sales.
Search engine optimisation has only really been around for the last ten years, when it first became established. Since then methods to optimise your website has changed again and again as search engine tools have changed how they search for information online. But it has come a long way from its beginnings as companies in the past have used unethical SEO to gain traffic to their sites and now there are penalties for websites that use these methods whereas in the past there was very little anyone could do.
So what is unethical SEO? From November 2005 the lines between what is considered ethical and unethical search engine optimisation was defined. The change here now represents what is allowed and what your website must comply with, as outlined by the search engines. At the same time as this, technology was released that would enable search engines to screen out websites that do not follow these regulations, a huge corporate example of this would be BMW’s expulsion from Google in 2006.
Ethical SEO is far better for both internet users and companies in the long term, although at first the unethical tactics, or ‘black hat’ tactics may work, you risk being removed from Google or another search engine indefinitely, which is devastating to a company. Using ethical search engine optimisation allows companies to set up strategic plans and research their websites compliance without breaking any regulations.
Simple aspects in your website could therefore be holding your company back inadvertently, for example, something such as your server not being set up correctly can result in your website being suppressed. If the server is incorrect then software that reads your site will be unable to and presume that what may well be an ethical and relevant site is not. This occurs more often that you would think and mainly to corporate websites, who have spent large amounts of money on SEO and think that this money has been wasted, when in actual fact it is a small problem that needs to be corrected.
