Most companies run a sites or host of websites via a server virtualisation. Server virtualisation is the utilization of one huge server that hosts a number of sites, as associated to all the sites being run on their own individual server. There are various negative and positive that come along with virtualisation that will be discussed here.
The major reason that a website would opt to use a Server Virtualisation is to reduce on overheads. The costs of sharing a server as opposed to have own server for that website is different. By sharing a server with a couple of other sites this allows the cost to be split for that server between the several companies.
One more reason is bandwidth. A smaller site that doesn’t need a lot of bandwidth really doesn’t need all the space that a single server will give. Not only will it reduce costs but it gives the website the precise amount of web space without having to pay for any unwanted or unused space. This is a great option for company websites that are smaller in size and have no plans to expand in the near future.
There are some drawbacks to server virtualisation that can prevent a website from running smoothly. 1st is the subject of accessibility. If a couple of sites are owned by a single firm but split on the server that is being shared, if that particular server goes down all the sites go down and are not accessible to the public at that time. This is a drawback as there’s no back-up. It is a temporary problem and a rare one.
Security is another negative aspect of server virtualization. Though the majority of the time a website is secure and can be accessed without problems. There are rare times when this isn’t the case and the info from one website is viewable accidentally by any other log in user on that particular server. This is one more odd problem with a server virtualisation but it can occur and those considering going this route with their website need to consider these pros and cons.
